California State Workers to Return to Office 4 Days Weekly Under Newsom’s Order

California  (Thechieftainspear) – California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed an executive order requiring state employees to return to in-person work at least four days per week, beginning this summer.

Hybrid Work Model Adjustments

The directive, which takes effect by July 1, marks a shift from the remote and hybrid work arrangements adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic. While many state workers have been telecommuting or following hybrid schedules—some working remotely a few days per week—this new policy will require most employees to be physically present in state offices more frequently.

According to the governor’s office, over 224,000 people are employed by the State of California, and more than half currently have hybrid work arrangements.

Changes to Hiring Policies

The order also instructs CalHR, the state’s human resources agency, to streamline hiring processes for certain former federal employees, particularly those affected by recent dismissals at the federal level due to Department of Government Efficiency policies.

These adjustments aim to fill critical roles, including positions in:

  • Firefighting
  • Extreme weather forecasting
  • Climate resilience
  • Water management
  • Medical and mental health care

Additionally, CalHR will provide further guidance for employees who have relocated away from their designated office or were initially hired under remote-work agreements.

Impact on State Workforce

With many workers now facing a return to office mandate, the order represents a significant policy shift in California’s approach to public sector employment. More details regarding implementation are expected to be released in the coming months .
