California Police Identify Family of 4 Who Died in Apparent Murder-Suicide as ‘Deeply Saddened’

Authorities in California have identified a family of four believed to have died in a murder-suicide. On Thursday, December 19, the Milpitas Police Department confirmed that Vinh Nguyen, 36, Betty Pham, 36, and their two children, aged 9 and 4, were found dead in their apartment on Tuesday, December 17.

The incident was discovered after family members reported losing contact with the family for several days. The police responded to the Turing Apartments at 1355 McCandless Drive for a welfare check. Officers gained access to the apartment and found the four deceased, all of whom had suffered single gunshot wounds.

Lieutenant Tyler Jamison confirmed that the suspect was the father, Vinh Nguyen. A registered handgun, belonging to Nguyen, was found at the scene. Authorities believe the murder-suicide took place on Saturday, December 14.

Both parents were employees of the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), according to a spokesperson. The family had reportedly been going through a divorce, though there were no previous reports of domestic violence in the Milpitas area related to the couple.

A local resident, Jerry Saldana, who lived above the family’s apartment, expressed shock at the tragedy, saying, “It’s scary. You know, we have a family, and to think that it happened just right below us, not knowing any information.”

The Milpitas Police Department issued a statement expressing their condolences to the family. “We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. The loss of their lives was preventable, and we urge those in need to seek support to prevent incidents like this from happening again.”
