UC System Faces DOJ Investigation Over Antisemitism Complaints

The U.S. Justice Department announced Wednesday that it has opened a civil investigation into the University of California system over potential violations of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act related to workplace discrimination.

Title VII gives the Attorney General the authority to investigate public employers when there is reasonable suspicion of a pattern or practice of discrimination in hiring, treatment of employees, or workplace conditions.

Chad Mizelle, the acting associate attorney general, cited growing concerns about antisemitism in schools and workplaces across California and the country. “The Justice Department is committed to enforcing Title VII and ensuring Jewish Americans are protected from discrimination in their places of employment,” Mizelle said in a statement.

The investigation aims to determine whether UC has allowed a hostile work environment based on religion, race, or national origin to persist on its campuses, potentially impacting faculty and staff. Federal agencies including the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the Federal Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism—a group formed last month—will assist in reviewing the matter.

In response, the University of California issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to fighting antisemitism and ensuring civil rights protections for all employees and students. “We remain dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment free from harassment and discrimination,” the university said.

Tensions related to antisemitism and free speech on college campuses have escalated in recent months, particularly after protests erupted at universities such as UCLA over the Israel-Hamas conflict and the ongoing situation in Gaza.

The investigation is ongoing, and the DOJ has not provided a timeline for its findings .
