IRS Announces $1,400 Payments: Here’s Who Will Receive Them

The IRS announced on Friday that it will be issuing a total of $2.4 billion in “special payments” to 1 million individuals. This initiative aims to ensure that Americans who did not receive all of their federal stimulus checks during the pandemic will finally receive the money owed to them.

The payments will vary in amount, with a maximum of $1,400 per recipient, according to the IRS. The agency emphasized that these payments will be sent automatically, meaning recipients won’t need to go through the process of filing an amended return to claim the funds.

IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel explained, “To minimize headaches and ensure eligible taxpayers get their money, we’re making these payments automatic.”

Who is eligible for the payment? The IRS will distribute the funds to people who filed tax returns but did not claim the “recovery rebate credit” in 2021. This credit was designed for individuals who did not receive all or part of their stimulus checks during the pandemic. Lawmakers approved three rounds of stimulus payments—two in 2020 and a third in 2021—and most eligible taxpayers have already received their payments either directly or through the recovery rebate credit.

Do you need to apply for the payment? No. The IRS confirmed that the payments will be sent automatically to around 1 million taxpayers who qualify for the recovery rebate credit but did not claim it. A letter will be sent to recipients notifying them of the upcoming payment.

When will the IRS send the payments? The IRS said that the payments will be sent out in December, with most recipients expected to receive their funds by late January 2025. The money will either be directly deposited into the recipient’s bank account or sent via a paper check.
