Allergy Alert: Nationwide Recall Issued for Popular Protein Powder

Orgain, a California-based company, is voluntarily recalling a batch of its chocolate-flavored 30g Plant Protein, Complete Protein Powder due to a potential peanut residue contamination. The recall was initiated after a customer reported an allergic reaction, though no additional illnesses have been reported.

The recall applies to a single batch of protein powder, which may contain undeclared peanut residue. Despite conducting a thorough review of the production process, Orgain decided to recall the product “out of an abundance of caution.” The affected product was sold in 2.01lb gray plastic tubs with blue labels, and it bears the expiration date “06/20/26” and the product lot code “4172-02-P” located on the underside.

Peanut allergies can cause various symptoms, including skin reactions, itching or tingling in the mouth or throat, digestive issues, and shortness of breath. In severe cases, an allergic reaction may lead to anaphylaxis, which can cause difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue, and throat, dizziness, and even loss of consciousness. Individuals experiencing an allergic reaction should immediately use epinephrine (such as an EpiPen) and call for medical help.

The affected batch of protein powder was distributed nationwide in retail stores and online after July 16, 2024. Orgain and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are advising customers to stop using the product right away.

While the contamination may pose a risk to individuals with peanut allergies, there is no indication that the product presents a health risk to the general public.

Consumers who have purchased the affected protein powder can request a refund by contacting Orgain’s Consumer Care Team at 888-881-4246 or emailing support@orgain.com, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. PT.

This recall follows a series of allergy-related recalls, including products containing undeclared milk, as well as recent recalls of supplements containing dangerous prescription drugs, salmon contaminated with listeria, and bread contaminated with metal.
