L.A. County Residents to Pay More as Sales Tax Increase Begins April 1

LOS ANGELES (Thechieftainspear) –  Beginning April 1, consumers and businesses in Los Angeles County will see a rise in sales tax, as the county implements an increase from 10.25% to 10.50%.

What’s Behind the Tax Hike?

The increase stems from Measure A, a countywide initiative approved by voters in November 2024. This measure introduces a 0.50% sales tax on purchases across LA County to fund homelessness services and affordable housing programs.

The revenue generated will go toward:

  • Homeownership assistance
  • Rental support
  • Mental health and addiction treatment programs
  • Other social services for vulnerable residents

How Does This Compare to Previous Taxes?

Measure A replaces the existing Measure H sales tax, leading to a net increase of 0.25% for shoppers and businesses. The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) has released an official Special Notice detailing the change.

Why It Matters

This tax adjustment will impact consumers and businesses, making purchases slightly more expensive. However, the funds are aimed at tackling urgent issues like homelessness and housing affordability, potentially benefiting the broader community.

What Comes Next?

Residents and business owners should review the CDTFA’s Special Notice for full details on the updated tax rate. Local officials will monitor the impact of Measure A, assessing how effectively the funds address housing and social service needs .
