(Thechieftainspear) – Big Bear’s bald eagle family is growing once again, with a third eaglet now beginning to emerge from its shell.
According to Sandy Steers, executive director of Friends of Big Bear Valley, the latest egg has started hatching, showing a small crack known as a pip—a sign that the eaglet inside is actively trying to break free.
“There’s a tiny hole, and we’ve already seen some movement,” Steers explained. “We’re hoping for a safe and successful hatch.”
Jackie and Shadow Caring for Hatchlings
Parent eagles Jackie and Shadow have been diligently feeding the two eaglets that hatched earlier this week. The newest addition will have to work a little harder for food at first, but as its older siblings eat their fill, it will have a better chance of getting its share.
“The older ones can only eat so much before they become too full,” Steers said. “That’s when the third eaglet will have its turn.”

While the youngest chick may face some competition, having two older siblings could actually be an advantage. The larger eaglets will likely focus on each other rather than picking on their newly hatched sibling, allowing it to grow stronger under the care of its parents.
Naming Contest to Follow
It will take several weeks before wildlife experts can determine the eaglets’ genders. Meanwhile, Friends of Big Bear Valley will hold a public contest to select names for the newest members of Big Bear’s famous eagle family.
