SAN BRUNO, CA (Thechieftainspear) – JCPenney has confirmed the closure of eight additional stores across the U.S. in 2025, marking another round of downsizing for the long-standing retailer. Among the affected locations is its store at The Shops at Tanforan in San Bruno, California.
The decision comes as part of JCPenney’s continued efforts to streamline operations following financial struggles in recent years. Since filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2020, the company has closed around 200 stores. The latest closures will also affect locations in Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Maryland, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and West Virginia.

A company representative cited various factors influencing the closures, including lease expirations, shifts in market demand, and evolving business strategies.
Despite the store shutdowns, JCPenney remains focused on its future. The retailer recently joined forces with brands such as Forever 21 and Brooks Brothers under a newly formed umbrella group, Catalyst Brands. As part of this initiative, plans are in motion to launch 1,800 new stores across the country, creating approximately 60,000 jobs.
While JCPenney continues to navigate industry challenges, the company is looking to reshape its retail presence with a mix of closures and expansion efforts .
