(Thechieftainspear) – Beginning March 27, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will resume fully withholding benefits from individuals who have been overpaid, the agency announced Friday. This decision reverses a policy introduced in March 2024, which had capped withholdings at 10% to help prevent financial strain on recipients.

The SSA has been under intense scrutiny after investigative reports in 2023 by KFF Health News, Cox Media Group Television Stations, and “60 Minutes” exposed how aggressive overpayment collections left many beneficiaries struggling. Former Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley admitted that innocent recipients suffered due to the agency’s collection tactics, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Under the new policy, anyone affected will lose their entire monthly benefit check until their overpayment debt is fully repaid, a move expected to spark further backlash from advocacy groups and lawmakers concerned about its impact on vulnerable populations .
