Sherman Oaks(Thechieftainspear) –A cherished treehouse in Sherman Oaks, built by former The Simpsons producer Rick Polizzi, is being torn down after a lengthy legal battle with the City of Los Angeles.
For 24 years, the large wooden structure stood outside Polizzi’s home, becoming a local landmark and a favorite gathering place for neighborhood children. However, zoning disputes and legal complaints from some residents ultimately led to its demise.
Polizzi said he poured time and money into fighting for the treehouse’s survival, spending $50,000 on legal fees over the years. The conflict even resulted in criminal charges after a neighbor raised concerns about the attention it was bringing to the area.
After a pre-trial hearing in January, Polizzi decided that continuing the fight wasn’t worth it.
“It was just so frustrating,” he shared. “We weren’t even given the chance to make our case. I finally said, ‘That’s it—we’ll take it down so the case gets dismissed.’”
On Saturday, workers began dismantling the treehouse, piece by piece. Watching it come down was an emotional moment for Polizzi, who had built it to bring people together.

“I wanted it to blend in with the neighborhood and be something beautiful,” he said. “We welcomed visitors, and on special occasions like Halloween, it became a tradition for many families.”
Residents who had fond memories of the treehouse also expressed sadness.
“My son is 39 years old, and we used to stop by here every Halloween,” said one longtime visitor. “This was a source of joy for our community, and losing it feels like a loss for everyone.”
Despite the treehouse’s fate, Polizzi takes comfort in knowing that for more than two decades, it served as a beloved piece of neighborhood history.
