(Thechieftainspear) – A family dispute in Beverly Grove ended in tragedy when a man shot and killed his older brother after witnessing him assaulting their elderly mother inside her home, authorities said.
Los Angeles police responded to a call about a shooting on the 400 block of North Alfred Street around 1:25 p.m. on Friday. When officers arrived, they discovered a man had been fatally shot by his younger brother after attacking their 80-year-old mother.
Violent Attack on Elderly Mother
Investigators say the 61-year-old suspect showed up at his mother’s home armed with a baseball bat following an argument. He allegedly used the bat to smash windows and household items before turning his aggression toward the elderly woman.
“The suspect not only destroyed his mother’s belongings, but he also threatened her and may have even struck her with the bat,” said LAPD Detective Samuel Marullo.

During the attack, the woman managed to call her 58-year-old son, who was working nearby, for help. He rushed to the home and arrived to find a horrifying scene—his mother was on the floor, and his older brother was on top of her, choking her.
Fatal Shooting Declared Justified
Hoping to stop the assault, the younger brother fired a warning shot with a shotgun he had brought from his workplace. However, the attack continued, prompting him to fire a single shot at his older brother, killing him.
“The shooter saved his mother’s life,” Marullo stated. “At 80 years old, being choked and having your face slammed into the ground could have easily been fatal for her. He had no other choice.”
The younger son remained at the scene and fully cooperated with authorities. The LAPD has classified the incident as a justifiable homicide, and no charges will be filed.
“This is not a murder,” Marullo confirmed. “He will be released because his actions were taken in defense of his mother.”
Community Reacts to the Tragedy
Neighbors who heard the gunfire described the incident as shocking.
“The shots were loud, deep—definitely from a shotgun,” said local resident Vincent Scarelli. “It’s heartbreaking for that family.”
Authorities confirmed that the elderly woman sustained a head injury but is expected to recover. The investigation is ongoing, though police have not disclosed further details regarding the family dispute or the identities of those involved .
