Man Faces Life in Prison for Violent Rape Attempt in West L.A.

LOS ANGELES(Thechieftainspear) – – A 33-year-old man is facing serious charges, including attempted rape, child assault, and burglary, following a brutal attack in West Los Angeles late last month, prosecutors announced.

The incident took place on February 27 around 12:30 p.m. in the Sawtelle neighborhood, where authorities say Ishmail Bangura forcibly entered an apartment and assaulted a 3-year-old child before targeting a 63-year-old woman in a neighboring unit.

According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Bangura, who was reportedly naked during the attack, physically overpowered the elderly woman. The violent assault was interrupted when construction workers at a nearby job site on Barry Avenue heard the woman’s screams and rushed to her aid.

Rick Dreyfus, a contractor involved in the rescue, recalled the moment he and his team intervened. “You freeze for a second, wondering if this is real, but then instinct kicks in—you have to help,” he told KTLA.

Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department arrived shortly after and took Bangura into custody. Authorities have not disclosed where he resides, though witnesses suspect he may have been staying at a local homeless encampment.

The 63-year-old woman was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries and later released. The child received medical attention at the scene.

Bangura has been charged with multiple felonies, including assault with intent to commit rape during a burglary and child abuse. Prosecutors have also added sentencing enhancements, citing the extreme violence of the crime.

“Crimes against children and elderly individuals—some of the most defenseless members of our society—are completely unacceptable,” District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated while announcing the charges.

Bangura has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody on a $2 million bond. If convicted, he could face life in state prison plus an additional 13 years and would be required to register as a sex offender for life .
