Domestic Violence Suspect Shot After Confrontation with Police

(Thechieftainspear) – A tense standoff in Montclair ended Monday afternoon when police shot a domestic violence suspect, leaving him in critical condition, authorities reported.

The incident began earlier in Chino when officers were called to a home on Monte Vista Avenue following a report of domestic violence. The victim, a woman, told police that her boyfriend, 47-year-old Jose Martinez of Rialto, had assaulted her—slamming her head into a pole before forcing her into his vehicle. She later managed to escape and alert authorities before being taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

Police located Martinez’s vehicle in Fontana at approximately 11:30 a.m. When officers attempted to stop him, he rammed two police cruisers and fled, initiating a chase. The pursuit ended shortly after noon in Montclair on Kadota Avenue, where Martinez remained inside his white Jeep SUV and refused to surrender.

Crisis negotiators spent over an hour attempting to de-escalate the situation, urging Martinez to comply. However, at some point, he exited the vehicle, assuming what police described as a “two-handed shooting stance” while pointing a dark object at officers. Believing he was armed, officers fired multiple shots, striking him.

Martinez was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remained in critical condition.

Authorities later confirmed that the object he was holding was not a weapon but a portable battery pack. Photos released by police showed him gripping the device in a manner that resembled holding a firearm. The incident remains under investigation .
