FDA Flags Muffin Recall as Highest Risk – What You Need to Know

(Thechieftainspear) – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has escalated a recent muffin recall to its most serious classification, Class I, indicating a high risk of severe health consequences or even death.

The recall involves Six Count Raisin Bran Muffins, produced by JE Bakery 2019 LLC, which were voluntarily removed from store shelves on February 12. The bakery, which distributes products in Minnesota and Wisconsin, issued the recall after discovering a mislabeling error.

Why the Recall Matters

The muffins were sold under the name Six Count Bran Muffins but were actually Glorious Morning Muffins, which contain walnuts—a major food allergen. Because the presence of walnuts was not disclosed on the packaging, individuals with nut allergies were at risk of serious allergic reactions.

The FDA includes walnuts on its list of “Big Nine” allergens, alongside peanuts, eggs, fish, shellfish, milk, sesame, soy, and wheat. Although no illnesses have been reported, the recall highlights the importance of accurate food labeling to prevent life-threatening allergic reactions.

How the Issue Was Discovered

The mislabeling was first identified at a retail location, prompting JE Bakery 2019 LLC to take immediate action by alerting stores and having the product removed from shelves.

The recalled muffins were sold under the Cub Foods, Jerry’s Foods, and County Market brands in 12-ounce packages with a Sell By date of February 18, 2025, and a UPC of 0 29341-00233 7.

More Recalls for Undeclared Allergens in February

This recall is just one of several allergen-related recalls that occurred last month. Other products recalled for undeclared allergens included:

  • February 15 – Mauna Loa Milk Chocolate Covered Macadamias (undeclared almonds)
  • February 19 – Berry Buddies, Berries & Pancakes snack packs (undeclared wheat and eggs)
  • February 20 – Las Ollas Botana Mix Snacks (undeclared wheat, sesame, soy, and food dyes)
  • February 20 – Ulker-brand biscuits, wafers, and snack rolls (undeclared wheat, eggs, and milk)
  • February 21 – Glicks Dark Chocolate Conettos (undeclared milk)

What Consumers Should Do

Although the recalled muffins had a sell-by date of February 18, anyone who still has them at home should not consume them. Customers can return the product to the store for a full refund.
