Police Alert: ‘Key Cloner’ Car Thefts on the Rise in SoCal

Southern California(Thechieftainspear) – Car thieves in Southern California are increasingly using high-tech methods to steal vehicles with keyless entry systems, according to law enforcement officials.

The Burbank Police Department issued a warning on Tuesday, alerting residents to a rise in “key cloning” thefts that primarily target newer cars equipped with remote ignition.

“Modern vehicles often rely on keyless entry, allowing drivers to unlock and start their cars simply by having the key fob nearby,” police stated. “Unfortunately, criminals have found ways to exploit this convenience.”

Thieves are now using small electronic devices—often no larger than a smartphone—to intercept key fob signals and create duplicate electronic keys within seconds. Additionally, some devices can be plugged into a vehicle’s diagnostic port to extract critical data, allowing criminals to reprogram blank key fobs.

To help protect their vehicles, officials recommend the following precautions:

  • Park in a secure location – A locked garage is ideal when available.
  • Use motion-activated lights and security cameras – Extra surveillance may deter thieves.
  • Store key fobs in a signal-blocking pouch – Faraday bags can prevent criminals from intercepting key signals.
  • Install a steering wheel lock – A physical deterrent can make theft more difficult.
  • Invest in a GPS tracker – Hidden tracking devices can help locate stolen vehicles.
  • Check with your dealership – Some manufacturers offer security updates to prevent hacking.

Authorities urge residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately. If you witness a crime in progress, call 911. For non-emergency concerns, contact your local law enforcement agency .
