(Thechieftainspear) – The Mississippi track and field community is mourning the sudden loss of Belhaven University sophomore Natalie Black, who tragically passed away in her sleep after an exhilarating day of competition.
On March 1, Black competed in her team’s first outdoor meet of the season in Clinton, where she delivered an outstanding performance. She achieved a personal best in the triple jump, reaching 11.01 meters and securing second place in her category. Her excitement was palpable as she celebrated with teammates and coaches.
“She nearly knocked me over with joy after her jump,” recalled graduate assistant coach Tytavia Hardy.
Her father, Toiwarn Black, shared how proud she was of her accomplishment. “She told me, ‘I’m going to make you proud,’ and she did exactly that.”
After the meet, Natalie returned home to Terry to rest after the long and eventful day. However, she never woke up from what was supposed to be a short nap on the couch.
Her mother, Formeka Black, reflected on their final moments together, expressing gratitude for the special day they shared. “From morning till night, we had such a wonderful time with her. She was so happy. Later in the evening, she simply laid down for a quick rest and never woke up. I thank God she did not suffer.”
To honor her memory, family, friends, and teammates gathered at Belhaven’s outdoor track for a candlelight vigil. The emotional tribute included heartfelt speeches and a commemorative lap around the field in her honor.
Natalie’s presence left a lasting impact on those around her. “She had the biggest, warmest smile,” said teammate Terra Kelly. “She made everyone feel included and valued.”
The Mississippi Track and Field Youth Club also paid tribute to her legacy, remembering her as a “true champion” whose dedication and spirit will continue to inspire future athletes .
