(Thechieftainspear) – When nature calls while you’re out and about, a quick stop at a public restroom may seem like the best solution. However, before reaching for the toilet paper, experts advise taking a closer look at it first.
A viral TikTok video has sparked concern after revealing that small, rust-colored stains or indentations on public restroom toilet paper could be the result of drug users attempting to clean their needles.
One commenter shared their shock, saying, “I almost had a panic attack when I found out about this!” Another person added, “I never use public restroom toilet paper—this just confirms my fears.”
Potential Health Risks
Public health experts have previously warned that some drug users resort to makeshift methods to wipe down used needles, and toilet paper is sometimes used in the process. This can leave behind traces of blood, which may carry harmful viruses.
While the risk of contracting a virus from toilet paper is considered low, Dr. Sermed Mezher, a physician with a large TikTok following, has noted that transmission is “very rare” but still “possible.”

Even though wiping a needle does not effectively disinfect it, this practice increases the chances of contamination. Residual traces of blood or viruses could be transferred to the toilet paper itself or to other bathroom surfaces, such as toilet seats and handles.
How to Stay Safe in Public Restrooms
To reduce the risk of exposure to harmful bacteria or viruses in public restrooms, consider the following precautions:
- Inspect the toilet paper – If you notice any discoloration, unusual stains, or indentations, avoid using it.
- Carry your own tissues or wipes – Bringing personal hygiene products can be a safer alternative.
- Wash your hands thoroughly – Always use soap and water after using a public restroom.
- Use seat covers if available – If not, consider placing a barrier, such as toilet paper, before sitting.
While the likelihood of serious health risks remains low, staying aware of potential dangers can help protect your well-being while using public facilities .
