(Thechieftainspear) – Douglas Kiker, a former “American Idol” contestant who won over audiences with his powerful voice and humble beginnings as a garbage collector, has passed away at the age of 32.
His sister, Angela Evans, shared the news of his death on social media, while another family member, Donna Kiker Carrillos-Ramirez, described him as a person with an infectious smile who always knew how to bring joy to others.
Kiker rose to fame during the 18th season of “American Idol” in 2019. At the time, he worked as a garbage man and had no formal singing experience beyond performing while on his daily route. His raw talent and sincerity captured the attention of the judges, including Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan.
Before performing his audition, Richie suggested Kiker step outside to warm up. Encouraged by host Ryan Seacrest, Kiker sang in front of a small crowd before returning to the audition room with newfound confidence.

When he took the stage, Bryan accompanied him on the piano as he delivered a heartfelt rendition of Rascal Flatts’ “Bless the Broken Road.” His performance moved Perry to tears and secured him a spot in the next round.
Although his journey on the show was cut short before the top 40, Kiker returned for the season finale, where he had the opportunity to perform “Bless the Broken Road” alongside Rascal Flatts.
ABC and “American Idol” have not yet released an official statement regarding his passing. The singing competition is currently in its 23rd season .
