In a quiet corner of Logansport, Louisiana, a man pulls his truck over to collect the mail from his mailbox. Among the day’s correspondence, he spots what looks like a check from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Could it be real?
Yes, it’s real — and no matter where you are in Louisiana, whether it’s Lafayette, Leesville, Morgan City, Alexandria, or even Tallulah, you might be receiving a $1,400 check from the IRS in the coming weeks. If you do, know that it’s money you are owed, and you should act promptly when the letter arrives.
During the pandemic, the federal government sent out Economic Impact Payments, or stimulus checks, to help those in need. However, some Americans did not fully utilize the Recovery Rebate Credit, which was designed for those who missed out on those payments. If you filed your taxes in 2021 and overlooked this tax relief, the IRS is now making it right.

If you didn’t apply for or receive an Economic Impact Payment, you could be getting a recovery rebate check now. There’s no action required on your part to receive it.
The IRS will begin processing these payments in late January 2025. If you set up direct deposit for your tax refund, that’s how you’ll receive your payment. Otherwise, you’ll get a physical check in the mail. Your payment method will be based on how you received your 2023 refund.
Additionally, the IRS will send a letter informing you of the exact amount you’ll be receiving. If you haven’t yet filed your 2021 taxes, there’s still time to do so and remain eligible for this rebate. The deadline for submitting your 2021 tax return is April 15, 2025.
If you have questions about the Recovery Rebate Credit or your eligibility, it’s a good idea to contact the IRS or consult a tax professional.
