California (Thechieftainspear) – A 40-year-old woman and her dog had to be airlifted to safety after becoming lost and stranded in icy conditions while hiking on Mt. Baldy’s Devil’s Backbone trail, authorities said.
According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Shawna Burger of Calabasas called for help around 2:10 p.m. on March 22, reporting that she had been hiking for hours before losing her way in dangerous terrain.
Stranded on a Treacherous Trail
A sheriff’s department helicopter crew quickly located Burger just below the 9,000-foot mark on a narrow, hazardous section of the trail covered in shale, snow, and ice. Officials said the path was no more than a foot wide, with a sheer rock face on one side and a steep drop into a canyon on the other.
Burger was found clinging to the rock face while holding her dog, with icy conditions making it too dangerous for her to move. She was dressed in a light jacket, shorts, and tennis shoes, leaving her ill-prepared for the mountain’s extreme conditions.

Due to the risk of falling and the lack of proper gear, rescue teams determined a hoist operation was necessary.
Helicopter Hoist Rescue
A specialized rescue helicopter was deployed, and a medic was lowered to secure Burger and her dog. The pair were safely lifted off the mountainside without injury.
Following the incident, the sheriff’s department urged hikers to be properly equipped when heading into the mountains. Officials reminded the public to bring appropriate gear, food, water, and clothing suited for changing conditions.
Trail Closures and Safety Warnings
Authorities also noted that sections of Mt. Baldy remain off-limits due to the damage from the recent Bridge Fire. The U.S. Forest Service has warned that violators could face fines of up to $5,000 for entering closed trails.
For the latest updates on trail closures, hikers are encouraged to check the U.S. Forest Service website before heading out.
