Los Angeles(Thechieftainspear) – A well-known Los Angeles chef and restaurateur is facing criticism following remarks he made in a New York Times interview expressing enthusiasm for Elon Musk.
Musk, the billionaire behind Tesla and SpaceX, has been working with former President Donald Trump on initiatives aimed at cutting government costs and improving efficiency. However, these efforts have sparked controversy, with critics arguing that they are dismantling essential federal programs without careful planning.
Musk’s political ties have also drawn attention to his upcoming Hollywood project—a Tesla Supercharger station combined with a retro-style diner and drive-in theater on Santa Monica Boulevard. Originally promoted as a blend of Grease and The Jetsons, the development was expected to open in late 2023 but has yet to be completed.
Chef’s Comments Stir Controversy
Walter Manzke, chef and co-owner of the popular République restaurant in Hancock Park, found himself at the center of a social media firestorm after expressing support for Musk’s work. In the interview, Manzke referenced his wife and business partner, Margarita, saying she was interested in purchasing a Tesla.

The response was swift, with critics questioning the chef’s stance given Musk’s alignment with conservative politics—something that remains divisive in Los Angeles’ largely liberal dining scene.
Restaurant Issues Clarification
As backlash mounted, République released a statement attempting to clarify Manzke’s remarks. The message, posted to Instagram on Friday, emphasized that his comments were not meant to signal any political position.
“At République, our focus is on providing outstanding food and hospitality to all of our guests,” the statement read. “A recent mention of Tesla was simply about considering an electric vehicle, not a political endorsement. We embrace innovation and sustainability while respecting diverse viewpoints. République does not engage in politics; our goal is to create an inclusive environment for everyone.”
Despite the attempt to clear the air, the post has since been removed, leaving some questions about how the restaurant will navigate the ongoing reaction.
