California’s Seismic Activity

California is one of the most earthquake-prone states in the U.S., second only to Alaska in terms of seismic activity. The region sits along the San Andreas Fault and several other active fault lines, making earthquakes a regular occurrence.

Earthquake Safety Tips

In the event of an earthquake, following safety protocols can reduce the risk of injury. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) recommends the following steps:

  • Drop – Get down on your hands and knees to avoid being knocked over.

  • Cover – Protect your head and neck with one arm. If possible, take cover under a sturdy table or desk. If no shelter is available, move away from windows and position yourself against an interior wall.

  • Hold On – Stay in place and hold onto your shelter until the shaking stops. If your cover moves, be ready to adjust with it.

Residents are encouraged to stay prepared for potential aftershocks and ensure they have an emergency plan in place .
