Du-Par’s Restaurant & Bakery ‘Struggling’ – Can the L.A. Institution Survive?

Los Angeles(Thechieftainspear) – For nearly 90 years, Du-Par’s Restaurant & Bakery has been a staple of Los Angeles dining, serving up its famous hotcakes and pies to generations of locals and visitors. But according to its owner, the beloved diner-style eatery is now facing financial struggles that threaten its future.

A Rich History in Los Angeles

Originally founded in 1938 at the L.A. Farmer’s Market in the Fairfax District, Du-Par’s was once a thriving chain. Today, the original location is the only one remaining in the city, holding onto its reputation as a cherished piece of Los Angeles history.

Frances Tario, the restaurant’s president and CEO, started her journey as a server at Du-Par’s before eventually taking over ownership. In a recent interview with Evan Lovett, creator of L.A. in a Minute, she reflected on the challenges of running the business.

A Difficult Road to Recovery

Tario admitted that keeping Du-Par’s afloat has been an uphill battle, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. To make matters worse, recent wildfires, including the Palisades and Eaton fires, have further impacted business.

“Even though we weren’t directly in the fire, it felt like we were,” she told Lovett. “The fires, rising costs—especially for eggs—and immigration issues have all taken a toll.”

The biggest issue, she explained, has been a decline in foot traffic, particularly at night.

New Strategies to Bring Customers Back

In an effort to revive business, Du-Par’s is extending its hours and introducing special deals. Starting April 4, the restaurant will stay open until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, hoping to attract late-night diners.

To sweeten the deal, they are launching a “Blue Plate Special” for $12, which includes coffee. Tario also teased an upcoming “early bird” special, which will be announced soon.

Where to Find Du-Par’s

Du-Par’s Restaurant & Bakery remains a fixture at its original location, near 3rd Street and Fairfax Avenue, where it continues to serve the community despite its challenges .
