Lamar Jackson Passes Michael Vick for All-Time QB Rushing Yards Record

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson made history on Christmas Day, surpassing Michael Vick to become the NFL’s all-time leading rushing quarterback. Despite not feeling at his fastest, clocking in at over 21 mph, Jackson ran for 87 yards in a dominant 31-2 victory over the Houston Texans, bringing his career rushing total to 6,110 yards — one more than Vick’s previous record.

The milestone was reached with a 6-yard scramble in the third quarter, which set up a 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Mark Andrews. “It feels unreal,” Jackson said after the game. “I’m grateful because that’s a record that’s been there for a long time. Michael Vick is one of my favorite players. That’s just dope.”

Vick held the record for 13 years, surpassing Randall Cunningham for the most rushing yards by a quarterback in 2011. Jackson, however, achieved the feat in just 102 games over seven seasons, compared to Vick’s 143 games. “That kind of speaks for itself,” Ravens head coach John Harbaugh remarked. “I’m proud of him for all the things that go into making great plays and for all the things he’s overcome along the way.”

The Ravens (11-5) are one win away from securing the AFC North title, thanks in part to Jackson’s outstanding performance, which included a 48-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Jackson’s maximum speed on that play was 21.25 mph, his career high as a ball carrier. “For real?” Jackson asked when told of his top speed. “I was jogging.”

This season, Jackson has had fewer rushing attempts than usual, averaging 8.4 carries per game — his lowest ever. However, he reminded everyone of his playmaking ability with his 87-yard rushing performance on Wednesday, including his 48-yard touchdown run, his third-longest career rush.

Jackson’s ability to run the ball is unmatched. “I’ve never seen someone run the ball like Lamar at quarterback — or honestly any other position,” said Ravens offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley. “The effortless nature of the way he runs the ball and makes defenders look slow is incredible.”

Despite his on-field success, Jackson’s day wasn’t without distractions. He mentioned watching Beyoncé’s halftime show at NRG Stadium earlier this week, but noted he was focused on his game preparation. “I was locked in,” Jackson said. “I was in here in the locker room preparing for the second half.”
