Seattle Seahawks‘ Super Bowl-winning coach Pete Carroll has expressed interest in becoming the next head coach of the Chicago Bears, with plans to return to the NFL sideline next season, according to league sources. Carroll, one of only four coaches to lead teams to both a national championship and a Super Bowl title, is keen to reset a franchise’s culture, a strength he has demonstrated throughout his career.
The Bears, along with the New York Jets and New Orleans Saints, are in search of a new head coach after firing Matt Eberflus on November 29 following a 23-20 loss to the Lions. Chicago’s interim head coach, Thomas Brown, had been recently named offensive coordinator before stepping into the leadership role.
Carroll’s coaching legacy is extensive. He transformed USC into a national powerhouse and later revitalized the Seattle Seahawks. Over 14 seasons, he led the team to 10 playoff appearances, two conference championships, and the franchise’s first and only Super Bowl victory.

After the Seahawks parted ways with Carroll last January, owner Jody Allen announced that Carroll would stay with the team as an advisor. Seattle then hired Mike Macdonald as head coach. However, in recent weeks, Carroll has expressed a desire to return to the NFL coaching ranks and is reportedly open to discussing opportunities.
Although Carroll, 73, has been known for his high energy, he initially said he wasn’t seeking to return to coaching. Last August, he stated, “I could coach tomorrow… I’m physically in the best shape I’ve been in a long time.” His stance has since changed, and now, he’s eager to re-engage with the grind of coaching.
The Bears, with the potential of selecting former USC quarterback Caleb Williams in the upcoming draft, have become a particularly appealing destination for Carroll. Sources indicate that Carroll sees the Bears as an exciting challenge, one that could reignite his passion for coaching.
This comes at a time when another legendary coach, Bill Belichick, returned to the game as head coach at North Carolina. Now, Carroll looks to be on the cusp of making his own comeback in the NFL. The Bears are set to host the Seahawks on Thursday night, providing another moment for Carroll to reflect on his potential next steps.
