(Thechieftainspear) – A New York City-based helicopter tour company has shut down its operations following a devastating crash over the Hudson River that killed six people, including three children, federal officials confirmed.
The tragic incident occurred on April 10 near the New Jersey shoreline. According to eyewitnesses, the helicopter appeared to break apart midair around 3:18 p.m., with its main rotor and tail detaching as smoke poured from the aircraft before it plunged into the river, the Associated Press reported.
On board were a family of five visiting from Spain—two parents and their three young children—along with the pilot, a U.S. Navy veteran. All six occupants were killed, and their bodies were later recovered from the water.
In the aftermath, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced via a social media post on Sunday that New York Helicopter Tours, the operator of the ill-fated flight, has ceased operations effective immediately.

The FAA also stated it will continue to assist the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in its investigation into the cause of the crash and is conducting its own review of the tour operator’s license and safety practices.
In a broader effort to improve aviation safety, FAA officials said they are currently analyzing helicopter and airplane hotspots across the country. Additionally, a helicopter safety panel is scheduled for April 22 to address risks and potential safety improvements.
“Ensuring the safety of the flying public remains our top priority,” the FAA emphasized in their announcement.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, and federal officials are urging caution as the probe continues .
