Los Angeles Mourns Death of Beloved DJ Known as ‘Voice of a Generation’

(Thechieftainspear) – Jed the Fish, a legendary presence in the Los Angeles radio scene and longtime voice of KROQ, has passed away at the age of 69. According to multiple reports, he died peacefully under hospice care at his Pasadena home after a recent diagnosis of aggressive small-cell lung cancer in March.

His real name was Edwin Jed Fish Gould III. Known for his distinct voice, sharp wit, and deep knowledge of rock music, Gould became a staple on the Southern California airwaves for decades.

A heartfelt message shared on his official Instagram account confirmed his death early on the morning of April 14, 2025:
“At 6 a.m., the world lost one of its most unique and brilliant personalities. Jed the Fish passed peacefully in his beloved home. The world will never be the same. RIP Jed, go be with Alice.”

Alice, his cherished dog, was mentioned as a beloved companion in a touching reference made by the Los Angeles Times.

Gould first joined KROQ-FM (106.7) in 1978, quickly rising to prominence as the station’s afternoon drive host—a position he held until 2012. Throughout his career, he worked at various radio stations across California, ultimately returning to host “ROQ of the 80s” on KROQ’s HD2 channel, where he connected with fans via online streaming.

Outside of the studio, Gould was a talented drummer and was honored by Billboard as Modern Rock Personality of the Year twice, in 1997 and 1999. In 2004, he was named one of the top radio personalities in Los Angeles.

Over the years, his show featured candid and insightful conversations with some of rock’s biggest names, including David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Sting, the Police, and U2.

Paul Sinacore, a longtime friend and fellow musician, shared a tribute on Instagram remembering the iconic DJ:
“Today I lost my dear friend Jed the Fish… the voice of a generation has signed off.”

Jed the Fish leaves behind a legacy that helped shape the soundtrack of Southern California for more than three decades, remembered for his influence on rock radio and his unforgettable voice.
