Just three months after opening in Tehachapi, A Barber Shop faced an unexpected closure due to the coronavirus pandemic. Despite the setback, owner Jesus “Chuy” Lopez persevered and recently celebrated the shop’s five-year anniversary in the small mountain community.
Lopez, who spent over two decades running a barber shop in Long Beach, decided to relocate to Tehachapi five years ago. The move was motivated by his desire to create a better environment for his three daughters—Mariah, Makayla, and Marina.
“When we lived in Long Beach, it was a lot of chaos. It was just overwhelming. Living here is like a break. It’s a lot less stressful,” Mariah Lopez shared.
Lopez described the transition as a decision for his family’s well-being. “I pretty much made the move for my kids. The slower pace and community feel here in Tehachapi make it a great place to raise them.”

Overcoming Early Challenges
The shop had a rocky start, shutting down for two months within its first six months of operation due to COVID-19 restrictions. Lopez’s experience in the barbering industry, spanning over 20 years, had never included a closure of this magnitude.
“My shop in Long Beach was shut down way longer than here. So that was the difference moving up here … We get through that. We get through anything,” Lopez said.
With support from family and friends, Lopez reopened and rebuilt his clientele. His dedication to his craft and community has helped A Barber Shop become a staple in Tehachapi.
Bringing Long Beach Vibes to a Small Town
Lopez strives to blend the vibrant energy of Long Beach with Tehachapi’s laid-back charm. The shop has become more than just a place for haircuts—it’s a community hub.
Barber Noe Madera commented, “It’s very fun. Lots of haircuts. Non-stop. We’re busy here every day.”
Lopez ensures the shop remains a lively and welcoming space, complete with conversations, pool games, and a steady flow of customers.

“He doesn’t take days off,” Mariah said. “Even on weekends, he takes us to Bakersfield or on vacations. He’s always making time for us.”
A Milestone Celebration
To mark the shop’s five-year anniversary, Lopez gathered with family, friends, and loyal customers. The milestone symbolizes resilience and a bright future for the business.
