Celebrating Milestones: A Barber Shop’s Five Years in Tehachapi

Just three months after opening in Tehachapi, A Barber Shop faced an unprecedented challenge: a temporary shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. Despite this rocky start, owner Jesus “Chuy” Lopez persevered, and the shop recently celebrated its five-year anniversary, a milestone marked by family, friends, and community support.

A New Chapter in Tehachapi

Lopez, who previously owned a barber shop in Long Beach for over 20 years, relocated to Tehachapi five years ago to create a better environment for his family. The move was driven by his desire to provide his three daughters—Mariah, Makayla, and Marina—with a calmer, more family-oriented lifestyle away from the chaos of the city.

“When we lived in Long Beach, it was a lot of, like, chaos a lot of the time. And it was just overwhelming. So living here is like a break. It’s a lot less overwhelming,” said Mariah Lopez.

Overcoming Challenges

The journey in Tehachapi wasn’t without obstacles. A Barber Shop was forced to close its doors for two months shortly after opening due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, Lopez’s determination, bolstered by the support of family and friends, kept the business afloat.

“My shop in Long Beach was shut down way longer than here. So that was the difference moving up here. We get through that, we can get through anything,” Lopez shared.

A Blend of Vibes

Lopez brings the energy of Long Beach to his Tehachapi shop, creating a unique blend of city style and small-town charm. Beyond offering haircuts, the shop has become a hub for community interaction, with Lopez often engaging customers in friendly chats or games of pool.

Fellow barber Noe Madera highlighted the shop’s bustling atmosphere, saying, “It’s very fun. Lots of haircuts. Nonstop. We’re busy here every day.”

Family at the Core

For Lopez, his daughters remain his top priority. Despite a packed schedule, he ensures weekends are spent with family, whether taking trips to Bakersfield or enjoying vacations together.

“He doesn’t let himself get a day off,” Mariah said, emphasizing her father’s dedication to both his work and family.

Looking Ahead

As A Barber Shop celebrates five years, it continues to thrive as a cornerstone of the Tehachapi community. Open Monday through Saturday, the shop welcomes all to experience its vibrant atmosphere. You can follow their journey on Facebook and Instagram.

Lopez’s story is one of resilience, family values, and the power of community, proving that even the toughest challenges can lead to success when faced with determination and support.
