Body Cam Footage Reveals LAPD Shooting Weezer Bassist’s Wife

(Thechieftainspear) –  Newly-released body cam footage has revealed the tense moments leading up to the shooting of Jillian Shriner, 51, wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, who was shot by police officers in Los Angeles while they were searching for suspects involved in a hit-and-run incident.

On April 8, California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to a crash involving three vehicles. The suspects, three men, fled the scene on foot and headed toward an Eagle Rock neighborhood near the 134 Freeway and Figueroa Street. CHP called for assistance from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) around 3:25 p.m. to help locate the suspects.

As officers searched through backyards on the 1200 block of Eagle Vista Drive, they encountered Shriner, who police say emerged from her home holding a firearm.

Body cam footage shows officers positioned behind a wooden fence in Shriner’s backyard, shouting multiple commands to her. “Ma’am, drop the gun! It’s the police! We’re here to help. Put your hands up, or you’ll be shot!” the officers repeatedly warned.

Despite the officers’ attempts to de-escalate the situation, Shriner allegedly ignored the commands and raised her 9mm handgun, reportedly pointing it at the officers and firing at them, according to police. In response, officers fired at least eight shots, striking Shriner twice in the shoulder. She then retreated inside her home.

A 911 call later revealed that Shriner believed she was protecting herself from the suspects the police were searching for.

About an hour after the shooting, Shriner, along with another woman — reportedly the babysitter for her child — emerged from the home with their hands up. The women were instructed to walk down the driveway and lie down on the street while officers took them into custody.

Shriner was transported to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. After being questioned, she was booked on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer. The handgun allegedly used in the incident was recovered from her home.

Shriner was released after posting bail and is scheduled to appear in court on April 30.

Meanwhile, the suspect officers were pursuing at the time of the shooting was apprehended later that day, though two other individuals involved in the crash remain at large.

The LAPD has stated that the investigation into the incident will continue in the coming months, with the department conducting interviews with witnesses and completing forensic tests. The police board will also review the situation to determine if the officers’ use of force and tactics were in compliance with department policies.

No officers or bystanders were injured during the confrontation.

Shriner is known for her work as a best-selling author, having written two memoirs. In 2021, she featured in the Starz docuseries Confronting a Serial Killer, which focused on serial killer Samuel Little. She also published a book in 2023 profiling Little. Her husband, Scott Shriner, has been the bassist for Weezer since 2001 and has contributed to 12 studio albums with the band.
