California Borough police reported that a puppy was discovered abandoned inside a portable toilet at Rotary Park on Christmas Day.
The young pup, full of energy, was found just a day before, and now, in the hands of Sherry and Kent Knight, he is thriving. The couple, who are the CEOs of Pet Search, a volunteer animal rescue organization in Washington County, took the puppy in after being contacted by an animal control officer.
“I think we’re going to call you Kringle,” Sherry Knight said, naming the pup after the holiday season.
The Knights have been running Pet Search since 1986, providing a fostering network for animals in need. They said the puppy, estimated to be between eight to 10 weeks old, was found around 2:18 p.m. on Christmas Eve. A witness informed police that the dog had been left inside the portable toilet at Rotary Park. Police believe the dog had been abandoned sometime in the previous seven hours.
As the Knights care for the pup, police are investigating the case. Kent Knight speculated that the dog may have been an unwanted Christmas gift or that the previous owner was forced to surrender it due to housing restrictions.

“From his face, and the size of his paws, we believe he’s a mix of lab, shepherd, maybe even terrier,” Sherry Knight said.
Though the puppy has no microchip, he appears to be in good health, and the Knights are having him evaluated by a vet. Afterward, they’ll assess his temperament and schedule a neutering.
The Knights are hopeful that someone will come forward to adopt the dog. In about two weeks, they plan to find him a foster home. However, they also expressed disappointment over the dog’s abandonment.
“Whoever did this, shame on them,” Sherry Knight said. “They could have contacted a rescue, but he’s in the best hands now, and we’ll make sure of that.”
If anyone has information about the dog’s original owner, they are urged to contact California Borough police at 724-938-3233. Those interested in fostering or adopting the dog can reach out to Pet Search at 724-228-7335, email info@petsearchpa.org, or message them via their Facebook page.
