Lax Security in Upscale L.A. Apartments Sparks Concern After Unsolved Murder

Los Angeles(Thechieftainspear) –Residents at a luxury apartment complex in Valley Village are expressing growing unease as reports of unauthorized individuals roaming the property persist—just weeks after a disturbing homicide occurred inside the building.

On April 26, the body of 53-year-old Menash “Manny” Hidra was discovered in his top-floor unit at the Ashton Sherman Village Apartments, located in the 12600 block of Riverside Drive. The grim discovery followed reports of suspicious activity just days earlier.

One tenant who lives near the victim’s apartment recalled being awoken around 3 a.m. on April 23 by loud noises and cries for help. He immediately contacted both the building’s security and the Los Angeles Police Department.

“It was really alarming. I heard a crash and someone screaming,” the resident said. Like many of his neighbors, he requested to remain anonymous due to safety concerns.

Surveillance footage reviewed by detectives and obtained by KTLA captured a man wandering the halls of the complex around the same time of the reported screams, appearing to attempt entry into several units. Police have since identified this individual as a suspect in the ongoing homicide investigation.

According to LAPD, the suspect entered Hidra’s apartment without permission, leading to a fatal altercation. Additional details about the case remain limited as detectives continue their investigation.

Despite the brutal killing, tenants say unauthorized individuals have continued to gain access to the property. Most recently, early in the morning on May 6, video footage from a resident’s doorbell camera showed a man pushing a bicycle into the stairwell and later seen moving through the corridors—someone residents say is not a tenant.

Footage from April 30 also captured another unknown individual carrying a trash bag inside one of the complex’s buildings, adding to residents’ concerns that security is still lacking.

Frustrations over building safety are not new, but many tenants say the homicide has intensified their worries. They allege management has long failed to address broken exterior doors and unauthorized access to restricted areas such as the roof. Though “courtesy patrols” have since been added, residents feel these measures fall short.

With the complex currently undergoing exterior painting, scaffolding has been erected around parts of the building—something one tenant likened to “a real-life ‘Chutes and Ladders’” for intruders looking for easy access.

Despite repeated attempts by KTLA to reach management for comment, the property has remained silent on the matter.

Anyone with information that could help identify the murder suspect or aid the investigation is encouraged to contact LAPD’s Valley Bureau at 818-374-9559. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through the L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-222-8477 or via their website at www.lacrimestoppers.org.
