Toyota Announces $922 Million Investment for New Paint Facility at Kentucky Plant

Kentucky Plant – Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK) has revealed plans to invest $922 million in a new advanced paint facility at its Georgetown plant, marking the largest investment in Kentucky this year. This move aims to enhance operational efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and improve the quality of vehicle finishes.

Governor Andy Beshear expressed his gratitude, highlighting the longstanding partnership between Toyota and Kentucky, which has been transformative for families throughout the state. “This investment continues our successful tradition and strengthens our workforce,” Beshear said.

The new facility, set to open in 2027, will span 1 million square feet and is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 30% and save 1.5 million gallons of water annually. This project supports Toyota’s 2050 goal of achieving zero carbon emissions and builds on the company’s latest advancements in paint technology, allowing for more diverse and vibrant color options.

This announcement follows a $1.3 billion investment earlier this year for the production of a new three-row electric SUV at the Georgetown plant, slated for release in 2026. Toyota’s total investment in Kentucky has now surpassed $11 billion since the company’s initial operations in 1986, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to the state.

Kerry Creech, president of Toyota Kentucky, emphasized that the new paint technologies not only enhance the aesthetics of the vehicles but also reflect Toyota’s dedication to environmentally responsible manufacturing. “This investment reinforces our commitment to long-term job security for our team members,” he said.

TMMK, Toyota’s largest production facility globally, has a rich history of innovation. In 2006, it became the first Toyota plant in the U.S. to produce hybrid electric vehicles and later began assembling fuel cell modules for hydrogen-powered commercial trucks. It also plays a key role in Toyota’s global electrification strategy, with plans to offer electric or hybrid versions of every vehicle model by 2025.

The Georgetown facility currently employs about 10,000 workers, and since its opening in 1988, it has produced more than 12 million vehicles, including the popular Camry. With a production capacity of 550,000 vehicles and 600,000 engines annually, the plant relies on over 350 suppliers across the country, including more than 100 in Kentucky.

As part of its broader commitment to U.S. manufacturing and electrification, Toyota has invested over $20 billion in its U.S. operations since 2020. The company also continues to prioritize investments in local communities, contributing over $154 million to education and workforce development initiatives in Kentucky since its arrival nearly four decades ago.
