Brazil – Three women tragically died and several others fell seriously ill after eating a Christmas cake at a family gathering in Torres, Brazil, on December 23.
The celebration turned into a nightmare after guests ate a festive cake, leading to the deaths of Tatiana Denize Silva dos Anjos, 43, and Maida Berenice Flores da Silva, 58, on the same day. Neuza Denize Silva dos Anjo, 65, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and passed away the following day.
In addition, three other family members, including a 10-year-old boy, became sick after consuming the cake. The dessert was reportedly baked by Maida and her sister, Zeli Terezinha Silva dos Anjos, 61, who is now in the hospital in stable condition. Seven family members gathered to enjoy the cake, with only one person not partaking.
The Civil Police, led by officer Marcos Vinicius Veloso, are investigating the cause of the deaths, awaiting results to determine what made the cake toxic. Zeli, who consumed two slices, was the first to fall ill and was hospitalized. She has provided authorities with details about where and when the ingredients were purchased.
The investigation has been expanded to examine the cause of death for Zeli’s husband, who died in September after suffering from food poisoning. Police are planning to exhume his body for further examination.

According to Hospital Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes de Torres, Tatiana and Maida both died of cardiac arrest, while Neuza died from “shock after food poisoning.” Zeli and the 10-year-old boy remain hospitalized in stable condition, and the sixth family member, believed to be Maida’s husband, has been discharged.
Neighbors at Zeli’s home will also be questioned by authorities. A family friend said the cake was a traditional recipe that they made every year, but investigators discovered expired products in the house, including mayonnaise that had been expired for a year.
In their examination, police also found a bottle with a white liquid where capsules should have been. This liquid will undergo further testing as part of the investigation into what caused the tragic deaths and illnesses.
