CASH CLAIM: Americans in line to get $8,250 checks from ‘steel’ data breach settlement – and you only need single receipt as proof

North Carolina – Americans affected by a recent data breach involving Nucor Corporation could be eligible to receive thousands of dollars in compensation. However, those seeking a payout must act quickly, as the deadline to file a claim is December 30, 2024.

Settlement Details

The class-action lawsuit alleges that Nucor failed to protect sensitive employee data during a breach that occurred between May 26 and June 1, 2023. The leaked information reportedly included names, bank account numbers, routing numbers, and other confidential details.

Although Nucor denies any wrongdoing, the company agreed to settle the lawsuit. Based in North Carolina, Nucor is recognized as North America’s “most diversified and sustainable” steel products company, according to its website.

Compensation Breakdown

Class members are eligible for various payouts, including:

  • Lost Time Compensation: Up to four hours at a rate of $17.50 per hour, capped at $750.
  • Extraordinary Losses: Payments of up to $7,500 for those who experienced identity theft or fraud directly related to the breach.

To qualify for extraordinary loss payments, class members must provide documentation of expenses, such as bank statements or receipts.

Key Dates and Filing Process

The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for January 13, 2025. Eligible individuals can file claims online and must submit valid claim forms by the December 30, 2024, deadline.

Spike in Data Breaches

Data breaches have surged in recent years, with many companies increasingly relying on cloud storage. According to the Harvard Business Review, over 60% of global corporate data is now stored in the cloud. However, improper cloud configurations often lead to breaches, such as:

  • Excessively permissive cloud access
  • Unrestricted ports
  • Unsecured backups

In 2023 alone, the U.S. saw 3,205 data breaches, impacting over 353 million individuals through compromised data.

Additional Opportunities for Compensation

Workers may also be eligible for $5,000 payments from a separate $1 million data breach settlement, and thousands of Americans could claim up to $401 from another multi-million-dollar privacy settlement.

Those affected by the Nucor breach are encouraged to act quickly to secure their share of the settlement benefits.
