Utah Murder-Suicide: Family Fleeing Violence in Myanmar Slain by Father

West Valley City, Utah – A tragic and senseless murder-suicide unfolded in West Valley City, Utah, last week, leaving a family devastated and the community in shock. Dae Reh, 42, allegedly killed his wife, Bu Meh, 38, and their three children—Kristina Ree, 8, Boe Reh, 11, and 2-year-old Nyay Meh—before taking his own life on December 17. The incident occurred in their suburban Salt Lake City-area home, roughly 10 miles from the state’s capital.

The lone survivor of this horrific act is the couple’s 18-year-old son, Sha Reh, who was critically wounded in the attack but managed to survive after being shot in the head. He was found by a relative who became concerned when Bu Meh failed to show up for work and could not be reached. The relative went to the family’s home, where they discovered Sha Reh in the garage and immediately called authorities.

Police reported finding the bodies of Bu Meh, Kristina Ree, and Nyay Meh upstairs, while Dae Reh and Boe Reh were discovered downstairs. Authorities are still investigating the reasons behind this shocking act of violence, but the extended family and friends are left reeling.

According to relatives, Bu Meh and her family fled Myanmar over a decade ago to escape the violent persecution of their ethnic group by the Myanmar government. They sought refuge in the United States, hoping to find a better life. Bu Meh, with little more than the clothes on her back, moved to the U.S. with her husband and children, leaving behind the horrors of her homeland and a refugee camp in Thailand. Her family describes her as a woman who had finally found security and prosperity in America, only for that life to be tragically cut short by her husband’s actions.

Neighbors and friends, who had always seen the family as friendly and happy, were stunned by the violence. “How can a father shoot his children?” said neighbor Mike Webster. “I just can’t grasp that concept at all. I can just see that poor little 2-year-old looking at her daddy.”

A funeral and memorial service were held for the family at a local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse on Saturday, which coincidentally marked Sha Reh’s 18th birthday. The teen’s family has expressed their deep gratitude for his ongoing recovery, calling him a “hero” for surviving such an ordeal. They have also asked for privacy during this difficult time, continuing to hold out hope for Sha Reh’s healing.

In a statement, Sha Reh’s family emphasized the impact of this loss and described how much they miss the life they had together. They noted that their loved ones will be remembered as a family that overcame immense hardship, only to have that hard-earned security shattered in a moment of incomprehensible violence.
