Texas – In the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff, automatic bids proved to be a disadvantage, with all four conference champions earning first-round byes now eliminated from national title contention.
The quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff delivered shocking results as each of the top four seeds were knocked out. No. 1 Oregon, despite winning the Big Ten, was defeated 41-21 by No. 8 Ohio State. No. 2 Georgia, the SEC champion, fell 23-10 to No. 7 Notre Dame. Meanwhile, No. 3 Boise State, representing the Mountain West, was overpowered 31-14 by No. 6 Penn State. The biggest drama came in the No. 4 Arizona State versus No. 5 Texas game, which saw the Longhorns prevail 39-31 in double overtime.
No. 12 Clemson, who won the ACC, also earned an automatic bid but did not receive a first-round bye. They were eliminated in the first round, losing 38-24 to Texas.

The semifinals will showcase two teams that lost in their respective conference title games: Penn State and Texas. Notably, Notre Dame, which does not belong to a conference, and Ohio State, which missed out on the Big Ten Championship due to a late-season loss to Michigan, are also part of the semifinal mix.

- Peach Bowl: No. 5 Texas 39, No. 4 Arizona State 31 (2 OT)
- Rose Bowl: No. 8 Ohio State 41, No. 1 Oregon 21
- Fiesta Bowl: No. 6 Penn State 31, No. 3 Boise State 14
- Sugar Bowl: No. 7 Notre Dame 23, No. 2 Georgia 10
The College Football Playoff semifinals will be held on:
- Cotton Bowl: No. 5 Texas vs. No. 8 Ohio State – Jan. 10, 7:30 p.m. ET
- Orange Bowl: No. 6 Penn State vs. No. 7 Notre Dame – Jan. 9, 7:30 p.m. ET
