Los Angele – Simone Biles may be ready to end her Olympic gymnastics career on a high note after her success at the 2024 Paris Olympics. In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, where she was named 2024 Sportsperson of the Year, Biles, 27, shared that returning for the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics would feel like “life and death” after her impressive four-medal performance in Paris.
Biles explained that with so many accomplishments already under her belt, there wouldn’t be much left to prove. “I’m at a point in my career where I’m humble enough to know when to be done,” she said, emphasizing that going for another Olympics could come across as “greedy.” She reflected on the personal sacrifices she would face if she returned, such as time away from her husband, Jonathan Owens, and starting a family. “What’s really worth it?” she questioned.
During the 2024 Paris Olympics, Biles captured four medals, bringing her career total to 11, cementing her status as the most decorated U.S. gymnast in Olympic history. She helped secure a gold for the U.S. women’s gymnastics team in the team competition and earned two individual golds in the all-around and vault events. She also won silver in the floor exercise, coming second to Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade.

These wins marked Biles’ major comeback after her withdrawal from several events during the Tokyo Olympics, adding to her already stellar career. Though she has yet to make a firm decision about her future, she has shown deep introspection regarding her legacy. “I don’t think I’ll realize what I’ve done until maybe I retire and look back in a couple of years,” she shared.
Despite her historic achievements, Biles remains grounded and not fully aware of the magnitude of her impact on the sport. In her Netflix docuseries Simone Biles Rising, she hinted at retirement following Paris, expressing a mix of relief and bittersweet emotions. “What happens in life now?” she mused.
After the Olympics, Biles also shared her thoughts on improvements for the 2028 Olympic Village, specifically regarding athlete accommodations. “We’re the best athletes in the world, so we deserve the best of the best,” she said, criticizing the cardboard beds in the village.
As Biles reflects on her career, the world waits to see if the 2024 Paris Olympics will be her grand finale, or if she will continue to raise the bar in gymnastics for one more Games.
