Paris – Following her remarkable achievements at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Simone Biles is considering stepping away from gymnastics at the peak of her career. In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated — where she was honored as the 2024 Sportsperson of the Year — Biles, 27, opened up about the possibility of not returning for the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. She admitted that continuing her Olympic career after such a successful run in Paris would feel like “life and death.”
“I’ve accomplished so much already, there’s really not much left to prove,” Biles explained. “It would almost feel snobby to keep pushing for more, especially when I’ve already achieved so much.” With 11 Olympic medals to her name, including four from the Paris Games, Biles is reflecting on when to gracefully exit the sport.
While Biles has not made a definitive decision, she admitted that returning to the 2028 Olympics would feel “greedy.” “There are sacrifices to consider,” she said, pointing to the challenges of balancing her career with personal life, including starting a family and spending time with her husband, Jonathan Owens. “What is really worth it at this stage?”

During the Paris Olympics, Biles helped lead the U.S. women’s gymnastics team to a gold medal in the team competition, earning two additional golds in the individual all-around and vault events. She also won silver in the floor exercise, trailing Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade. These wins solidified her place in history as the most decorated U.S. gymnast of all time, surpassing Shannon Miller.
Despite her extensive accomplishments, Biles revealed she’s still processing the magnitude of her legacy. “It hasn’t really hit me yet,” she shared. “I do it every day, so it feels normal. Maybe when I retire and look back, I’ll realize just how incredible this journey has been.”
As for the 2028 Olympics, Biles also shared her thoughts on changes she’d like to see in the Olympic Village. “We’re elite athletes competing on the biggest stage, and we deserve better than cardboard beds,” she remarked, emphasizing that the best athletes in the world should have the best accommodations.
While Biles has hinted at the possibility of retirement in her Netflix docuseries Simone Biles Rising, which premiered in October 2024, she admitted feeling a sense of relief after the Paris Games. “I’m just thinking, ‘What happens in life now?’” she said, reflecting on what’s next after such a monumental chapter in her career.
