Southern California is preparing for what could be the strongest windstorm in over a decade, with the National Weather Service (NWS) issuing warnings for significant wind impacts across the region.
The windstorm is expected to begin on Tuesday afternoon, affecting Los Angeles andVentura counties, with peak gusts reaching 80 mph by early Wednesday. Isolated gusts may top 100 mph in the mountains and foothills.
Red flag warnings have been issued and will remain in effect until 6 p.m. Thursday. Areas affected by these warnings include the Malibu coast, the Santa Monica Mountains, the San Gabriel Valley, Calabasas, the Santa Clarita Valley, and parts of the 5 and 14 Freeway corridors.
The National Weather Service has identified areas that will experience the worst of the damaging winds, including:
- Pasadena
- Burbank
- San Fernando
- Hollywood
- Beverly Hills
- Simi Valley
- Sylmar
- Porter Ranch
- Altadena
- La Crescenta
- Malibu
- Highways 118/210 corridors
- San Gabriel/Santa Susana
These regions are expected to face extreme fire conditions, especially in areas affected by last month’s Franklin Fire in Malibu, where the fire caused extensive damage to homes and structures.

Wednesday, January 8, will see low humidity levels, with sustained winds of 35 to 50 mph and gusts reaching 70 mph or higher. According to the NOAA, if fire ignition occurs, these conditions will promote rapid fire spread and extreme fire behavior, posing significant threats to life and property.
Southern California has already been experiencing dry winds, including the notorious Santa Anas, which have contributed to warmer-than-average temperatures and minimal rainfall. The region has received little rain since early May, and much of the area is now in a moderate drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.
The last windstorm of this magnitude occurred in November 2011, when winds uprooted trees in Pasadena, causing widespread damage to homes, cars, and other structures.
