Kern County Residents Express Worry Over Border Patrol Stops and Detentions

U.S. Border Patrol agents launched an operation in Kern County on Tuesday, spanning areas from Arvin to Bakersfield to Wasco. The operation involved agents stopping and detaining individuals at various locations, including a Chevron gas station.

Reports of these incidents quickly spread on social media, though local law enforcement, including the Kern County Sheriff’s Office and Bakersfield Police Department, were not involved in the operation. The ACLU has been investigating the reported stops and is offering guidance through its “Know Your Rights” workshops for those who may be affected.

Sarah Fuentes, an employee at a Chevron gas station on 7th Standard Road and Highway 65, witnessed Border Patrol agents questioning customers leaving the business. Some individuals were reportedly detained and taken away. One man, who requested anonymity, shared that he was questioned and detained before being released. The gas station owner expressed disappointment, stating that his clients, many of whom are hard-working regulars, were unfairly targeted.

While the U.S. Border Patrol has yet to comment on the operation, local authorities such as the Kern County Sheriff’s Office and Bakersfield Police Department clarified that they did not participate. The timing of the operation raised concerns, particularly among immigrant rights groups, as it coincides with the imminent presidential transition. Activists worry that this move signals the beginning of the mass deportations promised by President-elect Donald Trump, who has previously vowed to implement such actions starting January 20th.
