Why Michelle Obama Didn’t Attend Jimmy Carter’s State Funeral: Full Explanation

All five living U.S. presidents attended the state funeral of former President Jimmy Carter in Washington, D.C., on Thursday. However, there was one notable absence among the first ladies. Michelle Obama, former first lady and wife of former President Barack Obama, did not attend the ceremony.

In attendance were President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, former President George W. Bush, and former President Bill Clinton. Additionally, former Vice Presidents Mike Pence and Al Gore were present, along with Vice President-elect J.D. Vance and his wife, Usha. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also participated in the ceremony.

In his tribute to Jimmy Carter in December, Barack Obama shared heartfelt words about the late president. “Whenever I had a chance to spend time with President Carter, it was clear that he didn’t just profess these values. He embodied them,” Obama wrote. “And in doing so, he taught all of us what it means to live a life of grace, dignity, justice, and service.”

Obama also reflected on Carter’s impact, referencing his Nobel acceptance speech where Carter said, “God gives us the capacity for choice. We can choose to alleviate suffering. We can choose to work together for peace.” Obama emphasized that Carter made these choices throughout his life, making the world better through his actions.
