Her Mom and Sibling Were Pulled From the Ocean Alive — But This Teen Girl Has Vanished Without a Trace

A routine family outing on one of California’s most scenic coastlines ended in terror Tuesday evening when a mother, a young child, and a teenage girl were swallowed by the Pacific Ocean at Laguna Beach’s Treasure Island Beach. Two of them made it back. The teen is still missing.

Laguna Beach Marine Safety Chief Kai Bond confirmed the family was last seen walking on the sand before emergency calls flooded in around Tuesday evening on June 9. Without warning, all three were swept into violently rough waters. A mother and young child were pulled to safety by two bystanders who dove in without hesitation. Both were taken to a local hospital and later released.

“Their actions undoubtedly prevented further loss of life.” — Marine Safety Chief Kai Bond

But the teenage girl was gone. Search teams have since combed the immediate area and expanded their zone far beyond where the family was last seen — battling what Bond described as “challenging ocean conditions, including large surf, powerful currents, and limited underwater visibility.” Waves have reached up to 10 feet.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard have joined the desperate search. The teen’s identity has not yet been publicly released.

What makes this tragedy even harder to process — a high surf advisory had been issued by Chief Bond just hours before the family stepped onto that beach. The warning was direct: “When in doubt, don’t go out. Only those with expert ocean experience should enter the water.”

The National Weather Service had also flagged the danger, warning of surf reaching 4 to 7 feet with sets up to 9 feet and a high rip current risk across Orange County and San Diego County beaches. Rip currents, the city noted, can “quickly pull swimmers away from shore” before they even realize what’s happening.

What Happens Next: Search and rescue operations are ongoing as of this report. With deteriorating ocean conditions and every passing hour shrinking the window for survival, authorities are racing against time. The teen’s family is waiting for answers that haven’t come yet.

A beautiful California evening. A family just taking a walk. And now — one girl the ocean refuses to give back.
