A 13-year-old boy is fighting for his life at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) after being struck by a car while riding his bicycle Thursday evening in Southwest Philly — a crash that has left the local community shaken.
It happened around 7:45 p.m. on May 28 at the intersection of Island Avenue and Lindbergh Boulevard. According to Philadelphia police, a driver behind the wheel of a Ford Fusion was heading northbound on Island Avenue when the car hit the teen, who was crossing westbound on Lindbergh Boulevard on his bike.
Where: Island Ave & Lindbergh Blvd, Southwest Philadelphia
When: Thursday, May 28 at approximately 7:45 PM
Condition: 13-year-old male, critical condition at CHOP
Officers responding to the scene found the boy with serious injuries. They wasted no time getting him to CHOP, where he was admitted in critical condition. His current status has not been publicly updated by authorities.
Unlike many hit-and-run cases, the driver did not flee. Police confirmed the motorist stayed at the scene and cooperated with responding officers — a detail that could be significant as the investigation moves forward.
The Philadelphia Police Department’s Crash Investigation Division has taken over the case and is actively investigating what led to the collision. No charges have been announced at this time.
This incident is a reminder of the dangers young cyclists face on busy city streets, especially after dark. Authorities have not yet said whether speed, distraction, or failure to yield played a role in the crash.
