California (Thechieftainspear) – A controversial bill aimed at redefining self-defense laws in California has been withdrawn following strong opposition from the public and law enforcement officials.
Assembly Bill 1333, introduced by Assemblymember Rick Chavez Zbur, initially sought to address legal loopholes that could allow individuals to claim self-defense in cases where they initiated violent confrontations. However, the bill faced significant criticism, with opponents arguing that it could restrict a person’s right to defend themselves, their home, or their property.
On Thursday, Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher announced that the bill had been pulled due to overwhelming public pressure and concerns raised by district attorneys across the state.
Assemblymember David Tangipa, who represents parts of Northern California, including Fresno, Mariposa, and Madera counties, had previously criticized the bill, calling it part of a broader “criminal-first agenda.” Fresno defense attorney Mark King also expressed concerns, stating that the proposed legislation contained vague language regarding the use of force, leaving it up to juries to determine what level of force was considered excessive.

Gallagher described the bill’s withdrawal as a victory for public safety, preventing what he called another misguided legislative effort from moving forward.
In response, Zbur defended his proposal, stating that AB 1333 was never intended to undermine an individual’s right to protect themselves, their families, or their homes. He emphasized that the bill did not alter the Castle Doctrine, which allows homeowners to use force against intruders.
Zbur acknowledged that misinformation had contributed to confusion surrounding the bill and announced that it would be withdrawn once referred to committee. He also indicated plans to amend the language to provide further clarity .
