L.A. County(Thechieftainspear) – Authorities are investigating an alleged attack on a prison officer at Salinas Valley State Prison (SVSP) as an attempted homicide, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR).
The incident occurred on March 18, just before 9 a.m., inside a common area at the Soledad facility. Officials say the suspect, 43-year-old Anthony G. Ramirez, retrieved a makeshift weapon from his waistband and attempted to assault a correctional officer.
Correctional staff quickly intervened, managing to disarm Ramirez and restrain him without further escalation, according to a CDCR statement.

Ramirez, who has been incarcerated at SVSP since 2008, is serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole for second-degree murder, with sentencing enhancements related to firearm use and severe bodily harm. Following the attack, he was placed in restrictive housing while the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office reviews the case for potential prosecution.
Neither the officer nor Ramirez sustained significant injuries, though both were assessed by medical personnel.
The California Correctional Peace Officers Association was notified, and support services were made available to prison staff.
Salinas Valley State Prison, which has operated since 1996, houses over 2,400 inmates of varying security levels and employs approximately 1,800 staff members. The facility offers vocational training and educational programs for those incarcerated .
