East senior calculates the win

Marcos Labrado takes first place at Calculus Bee

Q:

What is Calculus Bee?

A:

Every year UNO puts on Calculus: The Musical and along with that comes the Calculus Bee. To get into that all the schools that come to the musical take a qualifying test and from that, about 100 students are selected for the semi-finals, and then eight students move onto the finals. It’s like a fast-paced quizbowl.

Q:

What are your plans for the future?

A:

Next year I will be at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and I will study either chemical engineering or biological engineering.

Q:

What nerves did you have leading up to the bee?

A:

I knew what to expect because last year I made it to the finals, too. I knew how fast-paced and stressful it was, but this year I didn’t think I’d do well. It was equally as stressful because the questions go by so quickly and sometimes it was like I just finished reading the question and I only have five seconds left to answer. I knew it’d be okay and that everyone else was going to feel the same.

Q:

What have you done to prepare?

A:

I’m not in a math class this year, but last year I did Calculus AP and I also learned Calculus BC stuff.

Q:

How did it feel to win?

A:

I was shocked and I didn’t know what was happening. I was happy and I didn’t think I’d do that well, I thought I was just lucky.

Q:

What was the toughest thing about the bee?

A:

How little time you have to read and answer the questions.
