NORTH MANKATO, Minnesota — A 17-year-old was shot dead inside his car late on a Friday night. What followed was a criminal investigation that uncovered a cold, calculated trap — and three men who allegedly set it.
Tyson Michael Goodsell never made it home.
Just after 11 p.m. on May 23, North Mankato police were called to the area of Pleasant View Drive and Willow Lane after a 911 caller reported gunshots. Minutes later, officers found a vehicle that had crashed into a townhome on Willow Trail.
Goodsell was inside. He had been shot in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
It Started With a Plan to Rob Him
Criminal charges filed Thursday reveal that Goodsell’s killing began as a planned robbery.
According to court documents, Goodsell had arranged to meet someone that night to sell thousands of dollars’ worth of THC cartridges.
What he did not know was that the meeting was a setup.
Ryan Robert Wolner, 18, allegedly asked a witness that night if they knew anyone selling drugs — and then admitted he was planning to rob Goodsell. He asked the witness to arrange the deal by text so the meetup would look legitimate.
Wolner also demanded to use the witness’s phone and vehicle so nothing could be traced back to him. In exchange, the witness would be paid $100.
A Rifle in a Backpack
Wolner then allegedly picked up Abdikhadar Fakhi Mohidin, 20, and handed him a backpack containing a rifle.
Mohidin and a third man, Ahmed Fuad Mohamud, 23, drove to meet Goodsell.
When the two cars pulled up side by side, Goodsell began to roll down his window — then stopped. He sensed something was wrong and tried to drive away.
In doing so, his car ran over Mohidin’s foot.
Six shots were fired into Goodsell’s car.
“I Shot Him. I Think He’s Dead.”
Mohidin called Wolner shortly after and said, “I shot him, I think he’s dead,” according to the charges.
Wolner later told a witness he was not present when the shooting happened and claimed Mohidin had pulled the trigger after being run over.
Investigators say otherwise. The charges paint a picture of a coordinated robbery that turned into a murder — with each of the three men playing a role.
All Three Had Criminal Records
Perhaps most alarming is what the charges reveal about who was involved.
At the time of the shooting, Mohidin was on conditional release for attempted first-degree murder charges in a separate case — one in which he is accused of shooting another person.
Wolner was also on conditional release, this time for aggravated robbery. He was legally barred from possessing firearms.
Mohamud, 23, is also facing charges in connection with the incident.
Mohidin now faces second-degree murder charges, along with a range of additional counts. Charges against Wolner and Mohamud are also pending.
Goodsell was 17 years old.
