A quiet Wyckoff neighborhood was shaken early Saturday when a collision sent an elderly woman’s car barreling over a highway overpass — and into a rock wall she never saw coming.
It started as an ordinary Saturday morning in Wyckoff, New Jersey. By 7:30 a.m., it had turned into a tragedy no one on Russell Avenue will soon forget.
An 88-year-old Wyckoff resident was pronounced dead Saturday after a two-part crash that began at the intersection of Russell Avenue and Ackerson Avenue and ended at a rock wall that stopped her vehicle for good.
According to Wyckoff police, the chain of events began just before 7:30 a.m. when the woman’s vehicle collided with another car at that intersection. But the worst was still ahead.
Instead of stopping, her vehicle kept moving — crossing over the Route 208 overpass and blowing through a stop sign before slamming into a rock wall and overturning.
Emergency responders arrived quickly and worked to pull the woman from the wreckage. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, but doctors were unable to save her. She was pronounced dead from her injuries, becoming Wyckoff’s latest traffic fatality.
