Man Drowns in Lake Michigan Near Chicago's Lakeview Neighborhood — Victim Identified as Matthew McCullough

CHICAGO, IL — A 32-year-old man lost his life Thursday afternoon after he was pulled unresponsive from the waters of Lake Michigan near Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood — a stretch of shoreline that sees thousands of visitors every week.

It was around 3 p.m. when emergency responders were called to the 2500 block of North Lake Shore Drive. Authorities found the man floating unresponsive in the water. He was immediately pulled out and rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite efforts to save him, he did not survive. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office later identified the victim as Matthew McCullough, 32.

The circumstances surrounding how McCullough ended up in the water remain unclear. A death investigation is currently underway, authorities said. No additional details have been released at this time.

Lake Michigan has seen several water-related incidents over the years, particularly during warmer months when residents and tourists flock to Chicago’s shoreline. Safety officials have repeatedly urged people to be cautious near the lake, as its currents can be unpredictable and dangerous even for experienced swimmers.

The Lakeview neighborhood, located on Chicago’s North Side, is one of the city’s most densely populated and active communities. The area along Lake Shore Drive near the 2500 block sits close to popular parks and beaches, making it a common spot for locals throughout the summer season.

Authorities have not yet released any information on whether alcohol or other factors may have played a role in the incident.

This is a developing story. Updates will be added as more information becomes available from local authorities.
